Botox is injected with a tiny needle into the desired area. In the case of forehead creases, crow’s feet and frown lines, the muscles that move the skin are too tense and cause the skin to wrinkle. Botox reduces the activity of these muscles and softens the skin in about five days. This effect usually lasts up to 6 months and can be repeated. This procedure does not require anesthesia and is performed in a very short time.
Collagen is a bovine (cow) protein and since some people may be allergic to it, a small skin test is taken and there is a four-week mandatory wait period. If no reaction occurs, collagen can be injected in a short office visit.
Botox can only be used on the forehead, nose and crow’s feet. It will probably work around the mouth and chin but would undoubtedly weaken the smile. Botox is primarily reserved for the upper part of the face.
Results can be fuller lips, less wrinkles and scars, and also reduction of many skin defects. The results can be dramatic and last several months. Subsequent treatments require less collagen because some of the initial treatment remains. For deeper grooves and wrinkles, your own fat can be harvested and then re-injected.
Some patients feel that collagen treatments last a short time, but this is only at the beginning of treatment, changes will come a little later.
